Lift your spirits by spreading goodwill

You know those weekend days when you feel like you’re just grinding out the chores, and you are feeling more than a bit fun-deprived?

That was this past weekend.

I was feeling anything but chipper when the door bell rang. There on the front steps were two Cub Scouts in full uniform. I would guess their ages at 6 and 7.

The younger of the two launched into his popcorn sales presentation, with his brother coaching him along the way about a more mannerly way of doing things…not in a bossy big brother way, but as a kindly mentor. I was touched by the dignity of the older brother–a little guy himself–as well as just how well manored both were.

I bought a $10 bag of popcorn and told the boys to keep the extra $10 for themselves.

They were pumped.

But, I bet I felt even better.

I went from semi-morose to happy from an interaction that lasted less than 3 minutes.

It was a nice reminder of how doing something kind, generous, or thoughtful is one of the fastest ways to boost our spirits when we’re feeling down.

So…who can you do something kind, generous, or thoughtful for right now…?

    Hi Laura,

Thanks for your post. Yes, spreading goodwill is one of THE most powerful “strategies” for both shifting our emotional state and staying in a positive emotional state. If youre class hasn’t watched Pay It Forward, that might be a good movie to watch in class and discuss.

    Best regards,
